Elvis Aron Presley Essays - Elvis Presley, Graceland, Memphis Mafia
Elvis Aron Presley Essays - Elvis Presley, Graceland, Memphis Mafia Elvis Aron Presley At the time, no one realized that The world of music and entertainment would forever change. It was noon, on January 8, 1935, when Gladys Smith Presley, a poor Mississippi God-fearing sewing machine operator and wife of farm hand Vernon Elvis Presley, gave birth to twin sons Elvis Aron and Jesse Garon Presley. Buried in an unmarked Priceville, Mississippi grave, Jesse Garon died within six hours of birth. Jesse?s twin, Elvis Aron, was to become the most influential force in the history of popular music and a melding force between cultures. As the world?s most endearing and successful entertainer of his age, Elvis sold over three hundred million records, and created thirty-three films. Today, Elvis is known world wide as The King of Rock n? Roll.? The dirt-poor with his polite and well-mannered ways, patterned his famous ?wiggle? and early singing style form the gospel revival preachers he grew up with at the family?s First Assembly of God Church. ?We were broke, man, broke, and we left Tupelo overnight,? Elvis said, a quote which typifies his early life, following his parents from job to job. In 1939 the total combined Presley salary was $35 a week, when young Elvis was enrolled in L.C. Humes High School in Memphis, Tennessee. After graduation from Humes High School in 1953, while driving a truck for an electric company, Elvis passed a sign that would lead him to fame. The sign read, ?Memphis Recording Service-Make your own records...Four dollars for two songs.? This is where Sam Phillips of Sun Records found his man. In August 1954, WHBQ radio in Memphis released the birth of a Rock n? Roll legend with, ?That?s All Right, Mama.? After an unsuccessful Grand Ol? Opry stint, 1955 brought ?Good Rockin? Tonite? and ?Milk Cow Blues Boogie.? The flamboyant personal manager/promoter, Colonel Tom Parker, who was managing the big talents of the day like Eddie Arnold and Hank Snow, started quietly helping Elvis with bookings. My July 1955, ?Baby, Let?s Play House? hit the national best seller charts. In 1957, Elvis moved from his suburban East Memphis home on Audubon Drive, to his new home, Graceland. March 1960 brought Elvis home from the war as a civilian. Huge crowds followed him home to Graceland. The Colonel worked hard to gain Elvis? favor back, and by mid 1960, five thousand fan clubs were generating 30,000 fan letters a month. Elvis was forced into seclusion, as any public appearance would cause a riot. An entourage of Memphis men soon referred to as the ?Memphis Mafia? escorted him everywhere. Endless work and strange eating habits followed. Too much peanut butter and banana sandwiches, burnt bacon, olives and vegetable soup pushed his weight up dramatically. On October 19, 1973, Elvis and Priscilla separated after five years of marriage. Elvis sited the tremendous strain of six months on the road. Priscilla was awarded custody of their only child, Lisa Marie. Nights were filled with Gospel signing, and days were spent sleeping, as Elvis entered into his forties. Extreme dieting and exhaustion landed him in the hospital, and Vegas gigs became predictable while fanatical fandom worshipped him overseas. In 1975 Elvis bought a jet airliner and named in after his daughter, ?The Lisa Marie?. His meteoric rise to fame, and the following legions of idolizing fans, is truly a phenomenon beyond this world?s experience. We can only marvel at his achievements, and live along side his mystic legend and following. Elvis and his fans were symbiotic, each depending, sharing, and supporting the other. On August 16, 1977, a shocked world would learn of his death. Rushed to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, from Graceland, Elvis was pronounced dead on arrival of cardiac arrhythmiaerratic heart beat. Thousands gathered at his home in Graceland to mourn and weep in disbelief. Thousands more still made the pilgrimage to the Graceland grave each year for the ritual August Candlelight Vigil. The King lives on today in our memories, his family, his films, his recordings, and in our hearts. It is rare in this world, that such an impression is made on the people in one?s own time.

INTRO to SOCIOLOGY Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
INTRO to SOCIOLOGY - Essay Example Such perspectives may be thought of as certain models of social reality. Indeed, each theoretical perspective offers general postulates about the way society works, and for this purpose tries to correspondingly interpret numerous facts of a societys functioning and development. As with other models which human beings employ for understanding the world, like in science, philosophy, and in our everyday goings-on, sociological perspectives construct models with the aim to uncover the meaning of what we regularly witness around us. However, particular models often tend to highlight some specific characteristics of the complex social network of interdependencies, and thus turn out to accentuate different elements of a societys structure and functioning. Some perspectives even proclaim the refusal to accept the indisputable universal validity of offered perspectives as such. In general, while such narrow focuses of sociological perspectives may be quite warranted if we consider that they h elp to concentrate the research on one problem or a set of closely-related problems for their proper clarification, there is a flip side of a coin as hardly any concrete theoretical sociological perspective may be righteously considered to be the best one. The reason for this is not only in the fact that conscious contraction of research space to one particular perspective makes the investigation inherently limited. After all, this limitation can be mitigated by addressing many alternative perspectives which in combination may produce a more coherent picture of social phenomena. The more subtle problem is rather in the limitations of sociological perspectives due to their mostly theoretical background which, if due to some reason it lags behind the actual social tendencies, may hinder productive efforts to build the most adequate model of social reality. Still, this problem seems to be inevitable in our dynamic social environment with its unprecedented level of change in many sphere s of our life. Nevertheless, this should not discourage us from attempts to achieve the proper level of understanding of the roots and hidden driving forces behind existing social problems with the help of sociological perspectives. Rather, with the above considerations in mind we should be able to properly see when different sociological perspectives can be effectively employed, and which strong and weak points each of them contains. For this purpose, let us overview the so-called conflict and symbolic interactionist sociological perspectives, and identify a social problem which can be analysed with the help of those perspectives. Theorists of the conflict perspective are interested in the macro level of society and see it not as a solidary formation but as a battle-field for power struggles. Under this view, people are not really co-operating for social benefits, but instead are advancing their particular interests at the expense of other people. The notion of power plays a major role here, and can be defined as the ability of a person, or a group of persons, to fulfil their own will regardless of the existing disagreement of other people who are involved in their actions. Marx is a famous conflict theorist who viewed the conflict between classes as

Law of Criminal Evidence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1
Law of Criminal Evidence - Essay Example This right is based on the Latin maxim nemo tenetur se ipsum accusare (no man is bound to accuse himselfââ¬â¢). This principle is found, explicitly or by convention, in many of the worlds legal systems including England and wales. (Murphy, P Murphy) Criminal justice and Public Order,1994, section 38, provides that no conviction shall be based wholly on silence of the accused. Furthermore, though not explicitly found in Europpean Convention of Human Rights, (Dennis, I H ,2002) still in the rulings of Europan Court of Human Right, right ot keep silence is maintained. ( Murray v. UK. 1996) It is therefore, found that Imtiazââ¬â¢s silence during pre-trial period is based on his legal right and will not esteblish any offence against him. For this purpose, the prosecution can not equate his silence to his confession in a court of law. In order to esteblish any guilt, prosecution shall have to maintain his case beyond admission during custody and the case should be suported by the evi dence. To keep silence in pre-trail inquiry by police is an esteblished right of the accused. He may maintain his position even when there is no advice by his solisitor or his solicitor advices against silence. It is found in this case that the accused Imtiaz had kept silence on advice of his solisitor and he also mentioned the same in his statement. However, he did not mention any reason for the same. Now, would there be a change in situation and legal consequences on the ground that accused had given any reason for solicitorââ¬â¢s advice? To be very simple, it must be seen in view of accusedââ¬â¢s right. Accused is not bound by the advice of his solicitor as in the case of co-accused, Shannan, who refused to have a solicitor altogather and gave her statement. Solicitor is supposed to guide you as per law and no advice against the law of the land is expected from a legal counsel. In this case, too, the advice by Imtiazââ¬â¢s solicitor is based on

Support for Abortion Essay Example for Free
Support for Abortion Essay Abortion involves the termination of a pregnancy or ending the life of an unwanted and unborn fetus. According to most pro-choice people, abortion means getting rid or terminating a pregnancy and not necessarily killing a fetus. They believe that the unborn child is only an embryo or fetus, not an actual living baby. According to the pro-choice people, a mother has an option of terminating or ending a pregnancy because the fetus is only in the early stages of developing. This possibly means it does not contain a life. Those factions that support abortion believe that a woman should have the right to make a decision concerning pregnancy termination in case there is no desire to bear a child. Thus, according to the pro-choice faction bearing a child should be imposed or forced on women. It should be a decision made by an individual at her own accord, and abortion is a solution, which offers them options of avoiding a parental life, which they may not be ready to embrace. However, the pro-life people insist and believe that an unborn fetus is a living child and terminating a pregnancy is equal to murder. They claim that an embryo is a living being that is in its initial and premature stages of development. Thus, according to the pro-life groups the fact that an embryo is perceived as a living being, abortion clears amounts to murder of a living person. According to the American constitution, all people are provided an inalienable right that is assured by the constitution. The American constitution guarantees that people have a right to seek and pursue their happiness in life. It is the fundamental right of women to seek this happiness without being forced to carry responsibilities that they are not willing or ready pursue. For that reason, based on this notion a baby can sometimes become a hindrance on the happiness pursuance of women (Manninen 34). This is because even if women contain an option of giving up their unwanted child up for adoption she still endure carrying the baby for months before giving birth. For that reason, abortion is a sure option of aiding women in averting this burden and solves their predicament of carrying an unwanted fetus. For that reason, the traditional values of forcing women to bear children that they are not ready to raise demonstrate prejudice because they deny women their guaranteed privilege and invades into their constitutional liberty (Thomson 70). Furthermore, abortion is a medical option, which ensures that the health of women is safeguarded. Many women are exposed to various dangerous medical conditions that put their health at a risk. This involves disease such as kidney illnesses, hypertension, heart sickness and anemia, as well as many other medical conditions (Thomson 72). In several circumstances, these diseases pose a life threatening risk to women. Thus, with such consideration abortion gives women an option to avert serious medical complications that can occur because of childbirth. The Unites States must recognize distinct historical experiences that are discriminatory to uphold the right of women as free individuals that are liberated and not prisoners of subjection laws (Zastrow 18). Furthermore, the traditional society of America was highly chauvinistic. The society was massively patriarchal perceiving women as childbearing instruments and homemakers while undervaluing their societal contributions and values. This resulted in the society prejudicing women and regarding them as minorities with little say in society. For that reason, under such circumstances abortion offers women an opportunity to enjoy a right that society had denied them for long. The right to abortion gives women a sense of individuality and recognition because she has the right to decide the fate of her future and that of the fetus she is carrying (Rossi 32). Conclusion Abortion is a notion that raised several questions in the American society. This has resulted in intense arguments by those who support and those who support abortion. The two factions remain highly divided in their opinions concerning the issuer of abortion. This is because they believe in varied egalitarianism and faith concerning the issue. In consequence, I believe that abortion should be supported based on the benefits it has in society which includes saving the life of women and offering women their right to express and make decisions concerning their bodies as individuals.

The American Within :: essays research papers
The American Within! Many people believe that if you were born in a certain country you will be forever labeled as a citizen of that country for the rest of your natural born life. We as humans should be able to express ourselves freely without the risk of being harmed. Americans are not necessarily born they are created at heart. Unlike many other countries, America has established a separation between church and state to give everyone the choice of what they want to do with their life. I believe an American should take advantage of what the country has to offer, benefit the country in a way you see fit, and also follow the guidelines that has been set forth by our founding fathers. America is known for their unlimited opportunities, and these opportunities were meant to be taken advantage of by the American citizens. Citizens are given many freedoms other third world countries do not even consider releasing to the public. In most cases, countries outside the United States have governments that take action on those who choose to speak freely or participate in a different religion. Freedoms such as freedom of religion, free speech, the right to assemble, etc. are all characteristics of an average American. If someone doesn't have the right to perform any of those just listed then they are obviously not an American. All of these freedoms and rights are not only allowed, but they are strongly encouraged. It is what this country fought so long and hard for. Normally, people who were not born in America come here for the labor. People of America are raised to get an education and a job, and to find some way to benefit the country. That's how America is economically and financially supported. Taxes are what keeps our country on its' feet. You are morally and legally obligated to pay these fees issued to you by the government. If you don't pay your taxes you're not supporting the country that gave you liberty and justice, and by not paying taxes your just committing a selfish act. We would not be here today if everyone in America did whatever benefited themselves. Everyone in this country puts together what they can to improve their country, we are united! Hence the name United States. Like any other country, the government is what keeps everything in place. The government is not there to make your life miserable, at least not in America.

Marriage and Ancient Greek Culture
Marriage is when a man and a woman are religiously committed to each other. In ancient Greek culture, this reflected on the relationship of the King and Queen, and Odysseus and Penelope, but they werenââ¬â¢t quite similar. The King and Queen had a closer relationship, while Odysseus and Penelope were always separated. Odysseus and Penelopeââ¬â¢s marriage was nothing like the King and Queens. Odysseus wasnââ¬â¢t really faithful while trying to get back to his wife. For example, the first time Odysseus wasnââ¬â¢t faithful was when he was captured by Calypso. In The Odyssey, it said ââ¬Å"Even as he spoke, the sun set and the darkness swept the earth. And now, withdrawing into the cavernââ¬â¢s deep recesses, long in each otherââ¬â¢s arms they lost themselves in loveâ⬠. That basically says that they had a sexual relationship. This wasnââ¬â¢t really good of Odysseus due to the fact that heââ¬â¢s married. On the other hand, Penelope is at home waiting for him, and making up excuses that she will marry someone new. To make the other people believe that she unsows her quilt to take longer. The better relationship is between the King and Queen. Unlike Penelope and Odysseus, they live together. In The Odyssey, they said ââ¬Å"Alcinous slept in chambers deep in his loft house where the queen his wife arranged and share their bed. â⬠That showed that they didnââ¬â¢t sleep in different beds, but that they slept together and shared it. The King and Queen are an example of what marriage should be like. Men and woman play different roles. In The Odyssey, there are different roles. For example, woman had to be seen with their husband and not any other man, because then they would be called a bad name. Also, men shouldnââ¬â¢t change in front of other woman while heââ¬â¢s married because it doesnââ¬â¢t show respect for their self and their wife. Ancient Greek culture had many rules, and they were better if you followed them. Marriage and courtship is very important to Greek culture. Not everyone takes it serious, for instance, Odysseus. He wasnââ¬â¢t faithful, and showed he doesnââ¬â¢t care for his wife back home. The King shows heââ¬â¢s very loving to his wife because they live together. Not all marriages are the same, and not everyone takes it as a commitment.

Jungian Theories Essay - 1301 Words
Jungian Theories History: Carl Jung was a Swedish psychiatrist and a psychologist. And during his 86 years of life, from1875 to 1961 developed the analytical psychology. He based his theories on the works of his close friend and mentor Sigmund Freud: the psychoanalytical theories. Early on in his career Jung followed Freud and supported his theories, but as Jung found aspects of Freuds theories that he found disagreements with, Jung parted and formulated his own (Anthony). In turn, his theories would go beyond psychology and affect theology, philosophy, and anthropology, according to George H. Pollock in World Book Encyclopedia. Jung was born on July 26, 1875 in Kesswil, Switzerland. Son to Johnannes Paul Achilles Jung, aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In 1912, Jung published his Psychology of the Unconscious, parting his theories from that of his colleagues. Jung thought Freud emphasis on sexual instincts on human behavior was a bit much, therefore, ending his friendship with his companion. During the last 50 years of Jungs life, he made trips to a variety of different countries. He expanded his knowledge on mythology and history by doing so and it resulted in the publication of his Psychological Types in 1921 (Encarta). Jung continued to write on his analytical psychology theories along with the relationship between religious beliefs and psychological therapy until his death on June 6, 1961 (http://www.eskimo.com/~dcs). Theories: Jung explains his theories in the psychological sense. He divided his theory into 3 core parts or psyches. First is the ego. This is the conscious state of every human, the personified traits and characteristics everyone shows to the world. The second psyche is the personal unconscious (Gannon, http://usd.edu/~tgannon/Jungbio.html). This division would include memories or recollections of past events. These images could easily be pictured in the minds of people, but have been stored for some odd reason. The Jung Society of Seattle (http://eskimo.com/~dcs/) says his third psyche is what separates his theories from others: his collective unconscious.
